Not sure about states, but i live in this province, nowadays:

I don't know how i should charaterize my living province, besides that is is, like the rest of holland : _flat_.
Oh, and you can find neat planning and signs almost everywhere in the country, everything (even the woods) have been ..well.. put into culture isn't the right term, tbut most things have sort of a .. planned look.

our family originated from the river Aa... hense the Aa on the end of my last name van der Aa.

hmm, that was interesting, so i googled a bit
and it turns out that (roughly translated from http://www.vanderaa.info/genealogie.php)


The last name "Van der Aa" comes from the much used name for local rivers, "Aa".
This name, that many rivers carry and which is an old word for water comes from the latin "Aqua".
In in the gothic (the people, not the style) we find "Ahwa" and in proto-germanic we find "achwa".
